Epithelium

Epithelium, also known as ' Epithelial tissue' is one of the four basic types of animal tissues, the other four being connective tissue, muscle tissue and nerve tissue. These tissues are mainly found on the surface, irrespective of whether they are found on the skin or the internal organs or the inner surface of various body parts. The cells in this type of tissues have little or no intercellular space (matrix). The epidermis, outmost layer of the skin is made up of epithelium.

Types

Epithelial tissues based on their shapes, can be broadly classified as squamous, cuboidal or columnar epithelium. The tissue may have single layer of cells or multiple layers, and thus can be classified as simple or stratified (compound) epithelium. It is to be noted that Transitional epithelium may also be considered as a type of stratified epithelium. Here are the main three types and their description:
  1. Squamous epithelium
  2. Cuboidal epithelium
  3. Columnar epithelium
